Monastiraki
The Flea Market in Monastiraki is between the Monastiraki square,
the Assomaton Square and around the Ancient Agora. The narrow streets
give way to all sorts of goods from the east and west. The Tzisdarakis
Mosque over looks the Monastiraki square. This Mosque has a lovely
pottery collection. Down the road is the Central Market on Athinas
Street where all food for the city is sourced from seafood to meat
and vegetables.
Psirri, Thissio and Gazi
Psirri was for many years a run down neighborhood but has been re-generated
into a trendy entertainment district in Athens and has really transformed
itself from its previous state. Lots of traditional tavernas, fine restaurants,
trendy bars and art galleries teem the streets of Psirri nowadays. Its
a cool place to hang out.
When walking towards the Acropolis you will come across Thissio which
is the city’s oldest neighbourhood with its restored mansions that
are transformed into posh restaurants, nightclubs and cool and trendy cafes
to entertain the many locals and tourists that swarm this area.
The Gazi district is a lively quarter with many night clubs and posh restaurants.
The local gas factory in the area was called Gazi and the district takes
its name from it. This old gas factory has now being transformed into the
Gazi Technopolis cultural centre.
Syntagma Square
This is where Athens heart lies. The Parliament buildings reside
here. It was originally the Royal Palace and was built in 1840.
For a great photo opportunity, why not visit the changing of the
guard in front of this Parliament building by the soldiers dressed
in their colourful uniforms. Not too far away from this square is
the Acropolis, the national Garden, the museums of Vassilissis Sophias
Avenue and also Plaka as well as the up market boutiques of Kolonaki
and Ermou street. Down in the metro off Syntagma square there is
an exhibition of archaeological finds.
