Museum Mile
Between Syntagma square and the Hilton hotel on the Vassilissis Sophias
Avenue, there are many top class museums that attract hundreds of thousands
of tourists every year. The newly decorated Benaki museum has a massive
collection of Greek history dating back 8000 years. The Byzantine Museum
covers medieval Greece and the Museum of Cycladic Art concentrates on
prehistoric works of art from the Aegean Islands. There is also a war
museum that contains the history of prehistoric warfare up until the
20th century. Contemporary Greek Art can be found at the National Art
Gallery.
Kolonaki
The posh boutiques and salon are all located in this part of Athens. The
square in this area is called Filikis Eterias and this is where all the
celebs and gorgeous people meet up and hang out. The bars and cafes of
Kolonakis are bristling full of the trendy types relaxing after a hard
days shopping. The gourmet restaurants and trendy bars will hold your
attention at night time with all the style and fashion in the air. There
is a great view as Kolonaki is located on the slopes of Lykavittos Hill
which is a great vantage point.
Exarhia
Around the Exarhian Sq. one can find a rock music bar or even call into
a traditional taverna or even a jazz club where lots of students and
scholars hang out in this neck of the woods.
Panepistimiou and Stadiou Street
Syntagma Sq. and Omonia sq. are connected together by Stadious street
and Panepistimiou street. The city’s best 19th century buildings
are to be found in this district and El Venizelou street which consists
of the university, the National Library and the Academy. The Numismatic
Museum and the national History Museum are located in the historic
lliou Melathron Mansion in the area. There is a great selection
of shops and restaurants in this area.
Omonia Sq. is one of the busiest streets in Athens. The re-generation
project of the area has included a new metro station and the place
is looking great these days. From shabby stores to trendy modern
boutiques, this place is on the up and up and its future looks optimistic.
